Visiting the Queen City of Burlington, Vermont

Discover Burlington, Vermont

The city of Burlington, VT is located in northwestern Vermont, on Lake Champlain. Burlington is the seat of Chittenden County. The largest city in Vermont, it is a port of entry and a manufacturing, commercial, and tourist center. Major products include electronic equipment, steel and wood items, maple syrup, business machinery, and textiles.

Church Street

The University of Vermont (1791), Champlain College (1878), Burlington College (1972), and a junior college are here. Ethan Allen, a hero of the American Revolution (1775-1783), lived in Burlington from 1787 to 1789. American philosopher and educator John Dewey was born here. Settled in 1773, the community is named for the Burling family, early settlers of the area. During the War of 1812 (1812-1815) Burlington served as a United States military base and was the scene of several skirmishes.

Visitors to Vermont flock to Church Street

Probably the most popular Burlington destination would be Church Street. The street was closed off years ago and is now primarily restricted to pedestrian traffic. The results are a vibrant, year round marketplace with a variety of shopping venues, restaurants and nightspots. The street performers range from magicians and acrobats to the strange and unusual. You never know what you’ll see on Church Street and perhaps that is why it is so popular! Battery Park is also a great location to relax and enjoy majestic views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Oakledge Park is another popular recreational area for swimming and picnics.

The University of Vermont is a public, coeducational institution of higher education in Burlington, Vermont. The University of Vermont was founded in 1791. A comprehensive research and teaching institution, the University of Vermont confers associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees; the university’s primary focus is on liberal arts education for undergraduate students. The university is divided into eight undergraduate colleges and schools: arts and sciences, agriculture and life sciences, allied health, business, education and social services, engineering and mathematics, natural resources, and nursing. Graduate-level studies are offered in the graduate college and college of medicine. Research activities are available to all students. Research facilities at the school include the Center for Research on Vermont and the Water Resources Research Center. Field research opportunities are offered on nearby Lake Champlain and in the Green Mountains. Burlington, VT. is also the home city to successful businesses such as Ben & Jerrys.

Vermonter

Vermonter.com was started back in the mid 1990's as a Vermont resource guide. Since then it has evolved into more of a quirky historical and unusual chronicle of off beat Vermont folklore, myths and legends. It's easy to create a Vermont resource but damn hard to corral all the "good stuff" in one place. But hey, I'm having fun! This website is best enjoyed on a dark, rainy day with a cup of coffee and a loyal dog (or cat) asleep at your feet. So enjoy and have fun. "There be WEIRD stuff here!" Comment below, if you dare!
