According to lore, when the Reverend Alexander Lucius Twilight, the U.S.’s first black college graduate, asked the Board of Trustees to build a dorm for the students of the Brownington Academy, they refused. So, he built one himself using extraordinary methods, including a staging platform which rose as an ox turned a treadmill. As the building rose, so did the ox and the treadmill. And, since there was no way to get the ox back down when the building was completed, it was slaughtered for a great feast of celebration. The Old Stone House Museum is a local favorite and a must see for visitors to the area.

Vermonter.com was started back in the mid 1990's as a Vermont resource guide. Since then it has evolved into more of a quirky historical and unusual chronicle of off beat Vermont folklore, myths and legends. It's easy to create a Vermont resource but damn hard to corral all the "good stuff" in one place. But hey, I'm having fun! This website is best enjoyed on a dark, rainy day with a cup of coffee and a loyal dog (or cat) asleep at your feet. So enjoy and have fun. "There be WEIRD stuff here!" Comment below, if you dare!
